What is a Black Soldier Fly?

Hermetia illucens well known as the black soldier fly, is the leading insect species used in the animal feed and pet food sector. Native from South America this species naturalized most of the world for 400 years. This friendly species is not pathogens for human nor a pest for agricultural crops and can be found all around the world, but are happier under the tropics where we operate and carefully listen to their willing.

BSFL protein in the diet of Beagle dogs

The present study, published in the Annals of Animal Science, measured the effect of defatted black soldier fly larvae meal in beagle dog diets. It demonstrated that increasing black soldier fly larvae meal inclusion in the diets (from 1% to 2%), linearly increased dry matter and crude protein digestibility as it improved anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative capacity.
